As part of a significant infrastructure upgrade at Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrooke’s), Clovis Canopies were commissioned by SDC Builders Ltd to design, manufacture, and install a series of bespoke canopy solutions aimed at improving access and enhancing the patient and staff experience across the site.
This carefully phased project was delivered at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, within a live hospital environment. All works were meticulously coordinated with the hospital estates team to ensure minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.
The installation comprised three key canopy structures, each tailored to meet the functional and aesthetic demands of a busy healthcare environment, delivered over a 30-month period from initial concept through to final installation.
• Covered Walkways
A dual-pitch and series of mono-pitch lean-to walkway canopies were installed to ensure safe and weather-protected movement for patients, staff, and visitors between key hospital departments.
• Ambulance Bay Shelter
A robust cantilevered canopy structure now provides immediate shelter at the emergency drop-off point, improving both patient comfort and operational efficiency for paramedics and A&E staff.
In 2024, LSI Architects invited us to assist with upgrades to the Main Entrance Canopy, working to a tight deadline set by the NHS Trust. We were tasked with adding side panels and structural steels to support new automatic doors, fully enclosing the entrance. As the original design hadn’t accounted for these changes, our structural engineer overcame several challenges to ensure a safe, seamless integration. The completed dual-pitch canopy now forms a striking focal point at the hospital’s main access route – providing a durable, enclosed, and welcoming solution that improves both wayfinding and the overall arrival experience.
All canopies were fabricated at our manufacturing facility in Kent, engineered to meet the demands of a high-traffic healthcare environment, combining structural resilience, low-maintenance materials, and seamless integration with existing site infrastructure.
The project stands as a strong example of how thoughtful, functional canopy design can enhance patient care, improve accessibility, and contribute to a more resilient healthcare environment, every step of the way.
