Kingsland Primary School

Clovis Canopies went to the top of the class after completing a challenging canopy installation at Kingsland School in Wakefield in time for the new term.

Clovis was tasked with manufacturing a custom-built Keston Lean-to canopy to provide Kingsland’s pupils with a much-needed covered outdoor learning area/playground.

Installation was booked for the October half term in order to ensure lessons would not be disrupted.

Clovis’ installation team’s expertise was fully examined on site.

Faced with the problem of minimal site access to the working area, the team was forced to call in a 100-tonne crane to winch the canopy framework over the main school building and into place.

And with the canopy sitting over a newly-built elevated platform, which was not able to take the loading of a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) to construct the roof, podium quick steps were the only choice available to the installation team.

This added additional time to an already tight install programme as the steps had to be constantly moved to gain safe access.

The complex nature of the site operation required the assistance of the main contractor and that little bit extra from the Clovis site team but thanks to their experience and some unplanned weekend working, the canopy was up and in place in time for the first lesson on Monday morning.

Mike Philpott, Contract Manager at Clovis Canopies, said: “We were delighted to have completed this project on time, effectively completing a 10-day installation programme in just seven days.

“We were more than happy to go the extra mile for the school, ensuring that the pupils, who have severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties, could enjoy their new covered learning area without delay.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I require planning permission?

We always advise that you call your local planning authority as there are no hard and fast rules. They will advise on whether you require planning permission for your proposed canopy. Although it differs from region to region canopies under 30m2 may not require permission but this can be affected by situations such as proximity to neighbours, listed building status, conservation areas etc. so it always best to check. We are happy to provide free of charge, scaled drawings etc. of the proposed canopy structure to assist your application should you require.

Will our concerns over children and staff safety be addressed prior to installation?

We have been working within schools for many years. All contractors are Clovis approved and CRB checked. Full risk assessments are carried out prior to starting installation taking into consideration your requirements and safety fencing is erected wherever needed at no additional charge.

What guarantees are offered?

Subject to appropriate cleaning and maintenance we offer the following guarantees:-

  • Framework – 25 years against failure within design, wind and snow loadings
