A self‑storage company has expanded its facilities with the installation of a bespoke Clovis canopy designed to provide year‑round weather protection for customers and their goods. Space Saver in Whitstable required a 100m long structure to cover a series of storage units that had not yet been constructed. Working closely with the client, Clovis designed and delivered a solution that would cover the loading bay area while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding buildings.
Space Saver is thought to be the first self‑storage company in the UK to offer fully covered access for vehicles. Established in 1992, the business provides more than 1,200 rooms for both commercial and personal storage. Their Managing Director at the time of installation explained that Clovis’ experience in delivering bespoke canopy systems was a key factor in selecting the unique L‑shaped design.
“The canopy had to fit in with our existing buildings, which it did beautifully,” he said. “I was also very taken with the simplicity of the design. It also helped that Clovis were able to bespoke the canopy in Space Saver livery – blue, white and yellow. It’s given us a unique self-storage option unlike any other in the country.”
The finished canopy combined two designs – the Oxford Barrel and the Oxford Lean‑to – to form an L‑shaped structure covering 60 storage units. The installation needed to connect both planned and existing buildings, provide sufficient length and width for vehicle manoeuvring, and maintain a height suitable for removal lorries. With a roof span of 7m x 40m and eaves at 4.4m high, the completed canopy achieved all requirements and now offers a practical, weather‑protected area for daily operations.

Each canopy framework is supplied in the colour of choice from the standard RAL range. A match for most school colour schemes can be found with that range if required.
At Clovis Canopies we use polycarbonate roofing as although slightly more expensive, we find it has a better combination of strength, impact resistance, sheet size and colour, fire / flame resistance and longevity of life than any of the other above mentioned cheaper materials.
