Pinfold Projects were appointed by Derby City Council to deliver two new canopy structures at the Stores Road Depot in Derby as part of a wider programme of site improvements. The council required durable, low‑maintenance canopies that would support the day‑to‑day activities of their operational teams, providing essential weather protection and helping to modernise the overall depot environment. These improvements form part of the council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the efficiency, safety and functionality of this key service hub.
To meet the specific needs of the site, we supplied and installed two Keston Lean‑To canopies, each designed with a mono or single‑pitch roof profile to integrate seamlessly with existing buildings. The first canopy was created to provide a sheltered waiting area for onsite personnel, ensuring a comfortable and protected space in all weather conditions. The second canopy was installed to offer dedicated shelter for essential equipment, enabling improved organisation and safeguarding operational assets throughout the year.
Both structures were finished to a high standard using profiled metal cladding in a bright blue, chosen for its durability and striking visual impact. The steelwork was powder‑coated in Pure Red, giving each canopy a robust and long‑lasting finish that enhances the depot’s appearance while withstanding the demands of a busy operational environment.
Working within an active council depot required careful planning and coordination, and the installation works were delivered with minimal disruption to daily activities. The completed canopies now play an important role in supporting smoother operations across the site, improving usability of external areas and contributing to a more modern, practical and efficient depot layout.
These enhancements help ensure the Stores Road Depot continues to meet the operational requirements of Derby City Council’s service activities, supporting staff, equipment and everyday processes with well‑designed and reliable weather protection.
Timescale: 4-6 weeks for design and fabrication, 5 days for on-site installation.

We always advise that you call your local planning authority as there are no hard and fast rules. They will advise on whether you require planning permission for your proposed canopy. Although it differs from region to region canopies under 30m2 may not require permission but this can be affected by situations such as proximity to neighbours, listed building status, conservation areas etc. so it always best to check. We are happy to provide free of charge, scaled drawings etc. of the proposed canopy structure to assist your application should you require.
Yes unlike some solutions that need to be taken down in the winter or during high winds our canopies are designed to be useable all year round. The cladding materials as well as providing shade are also waterproof so that they can be used during wet weather.
In relation to our canopies Building Regulations specify the standard to which they should be built i.e. strength, fire rating of materials etc. Again it is advisable to contact your local Building Control officer(s), as a rule of thumb any canopy over 30m2 will require conformity to building regulations and an application will need to be made although this figure can be lower. Most of our structures are supplied conforming to the requirements for these regulations as standard and generic sets of structural calculations can be supplied free of charge to demonstrate to Building Control the integrity of the proposed structure and foundations.
Subject to appropriate cleaning and maintenance we offer the following guarantees:-
No, all canopies are fixed on to concrete pads or bases as the structures can lift out from the ground if not fixed into a suitable concrete base due to the uplift created by wind acting on the roof area.
No, our prices are all inclusive.
Each canopy framework is supplied in the colour of choice from the standard RAL range. A match for most school colour schemes can be found with that range if required.
We'd love to hear from you
